What We Know So Far About Duncan Jones’ Rogue Trooper Animated Film

A Bold New Chapter for a Classic 2000 AD Hero

Director Duncan Jones, known for Moon, Source Code, and Warcraft, is bringing the cult 2000 AD comic Rogue Trooper to life as a fully CG-animated movie. Rather than using traditional animation or live action, the production is being built entirely in Unreal Engine 5, a cutting-edge real-time graphics engine that allows for highly detailed visuals and performance capture.

Produced by Rebellion Developments and Liberty Films, the movie wrapped principal motion capture photography at Rebellion’s UK studios. Jones is not only directing but also writing and producing the film, signaling a strong personal investment in faithfully adapting the source material.

What Is Rogue Trooper, Really?

The film is based on the long-running Rogue Trooper strip in the British anthology comic 2000 AD, created by Gerry Finley-Day and Dave Gibbons. It centers on “19,” a Genetic Infantryman, a super soldier engineered to survive on the war-torn planet Nu-Earth, where chemical and biological weapons have turned much of the world into a hazardous wasteland.

Rogue is the only survivor of his unit after a betrayal. He travels across Nu-Earth seeking revenge and is joined by the digital personalities of three fallen comrades. These comrades’ minds are stored in his equipment (one in his helmet, one in his rifle, and one in his backpack). The original comic is known for combining brutal war themes with political intrigue, and even has a certain dark humor, which Jones has said he respects deeply.

The Cast and Characters

The voice cast for the Rogue Trooper film is star-studded. Aneurin Barnard plays the title role, giving voice to the genetically engineered super soldier. Hayley Atwell, Jack Lowden, Daryl McCormack, Reece Shearsmith, Sean Bean, Asa Butterfield, Matt Berry, Jemaine Clement, Alice Lowe, and Diane Morgan are all part of the ensemble.

Notably, Jemaine Clement and Matt Berry play two characters named Mr Brass and Mr Bland, battlefield looters with their own agendas.

Why the Animation Approach Matters

Using Unreal Engine 5 is a bold choice, but one that gives this adaptation real technical muscle. Thanks to Unreal’s MetaHuman tools, the filmmakers can achieve high-fidelity character animation that captures the actors’ performances in detail. This pipeline allowed the team to use motion capture and real-time visualization, helping bridge the gap between film-level storytelling and game-level graphics.

Producer Stuart Fenegan has said that this approach was chosen to give “amazing fidelity” to the actors’ performances, maintaining nuance and emotional authenticity rather than settling for flat or generic CG. The animation studio Treehouse Digital is leading the visual production using Unreal Engine 5.

Duncan Jones Returns to His Roots

Duncan Jones has a history of blending science fiction and emotionally compelling stories. His first film, Moon, remains a cult classic, and his other works, such as Source Code and Mute, lean into both futuristic ideas and human psychology.

He has described the source material as “political and brutal at times, but always with a twinkle in the eye,” showing that he understands the tone of the original 2000 AD comic.

A First Look at the Visuals, Setting, and World-Building

In June 2025, four still images from the film were released, giving fans their first real glimpse at Jones’ version of Nu-Earth. One still shows Rogue closeup, blue-skinned and helmeted. Another shows us a long, toxic wasteland littered with war machinery. There’s also an image of soldiers navigating the dangerous terrain, hinting at both the scale and the stakes of the conflict.

Jones has said he is “almost finished” with the production, and he personally teased fans at San Diego Comic-Con, expressing excitement about sharing the final product.

What This Could Mean for 2000 AD and Adaptations

If Rogue Trooper succeeds, it could open the door for more animated adaptations of 2000 AD properties. The British publisher’s catalog includes many iconic characters. From Judge Dredd to the 86ers, and the use of real-time animation via Unreal Engine could offer a cost-efficient but visually spectacular way to bring more of these stories to film.

For fans of the original comic, this adaptation offers a rare opportunity to see Rogue Trooper in a form that feels true to its gritty sci-fi roots. For newcomers, it could serve as an entry point to an expansive and morally complex universe.

Bottom line: Duncan Jones’ Rogue Trooper may become one of the most ambitious and technically advanced adaptations of a classic British comic. Fans of science fiction, war stories, and deep character drama should keep a close eye on this project.
