Skybound Entertainment has confirmed that its popular Energon Universe comic book line, merging the worlds of Transformers and G.I. Joe, will be adapted into an animated series. The project marks the first time these Hasbro icons will share the spotlight in animation under the Energon Universe banner, expanding Skybound’s ambitious cross-franchise storytelling.
What is the Energon Universe
The Energon Universe comics, launched by Skybound and published via Image Comics, have drawn praise for their bold approach to the Transformers and G.I. Joe mythos. By uniting these properties in a shared continuity, Skybound has energized longtime fans and introduced a fresh narrative for new readers. The announcement of an animated adaptation signals a major step for both franchises, which have traditionally remained separate outside of comic crossovers.
Transformers Grows with Its Audience
The new animated series will reportedly be aimed at adult audiences, reflecting the tone and complexity of the comic source material. While specific plot details remain under wraps, the show is expected to weave together the ongoing conflicts between Autobots, Decepticons, and the covert military operatives of G.I. Joe and Cobra. The series will also incorporate elements from Void Rivals, another Skybound property integral to the Energon Universe’s broader narrative.
Robert Kirkman, Skybound’s co-founder and chief architect of the Energon Universe, is closely involved with the adaptation. Kirkman’s track record (most notably with The Walking Dead and Invincible) positions the project for both critical and commercial attention. Animation production partners and the series showrunner have yet to be announced, but the series is confirmed to be in development for a major streaming platform.
Visually, fans can expect the animated series to draw heavily from the comics’ dynamic art direction. The Energon Universe comics are known for their sharp character redesigns and cinematic action sequences, and early concept art teases a bold, stylized approach that honors both franchises’ legacies.
This crossover arrives at a time when adult animation is enjoying heightened visibility and demand, with streamers investing in genre-spanning projects that appeal to both nostalgic viewers and new audiences. The merging of Transformers and G.I. Joe in this format sets a precedent for further cross-franchise ventures and could pave the way for additional adaptations in Hasbro’s portfolio.
The finale of the third story arc in the Energon Universe comics released on March 12, 2025. Official details on release timing, episode count, and streaming home are expected to follow in the coming months.
