WEBTOON Brings Webcomics to Life with Short-Form Video Episodes

WEBTOON is changing how fans engage with their favorite stories by rolling out “Video Episodes,” a new feature that transforms select webcomics into animated, voice-acted, short-form videos. The update went live in August 2025 and offers a fresh way to experience WEBTOON’s original content.

In close collaboration with the original creators, WEBTOON has taken 14 of its English-language Originals and adapted them into 20 five-minute video episodes each, and all of them are free to watch. These are not just static comics with background sound, they include motion graphics, full voice acting, immersive music and effects to bring the narratives to life in a new way.

Yongsoo Kim, WEBTOON’s Chief Strategy Officer and Head of Global WEBTOON, said that this was born out of the platform’s desire to innovate and meet Gen Z demand for short-form video. One of the creators, Jessica Ramsden (of Star Catcher), spoke about how much she enjoyed being part of the process, especially in choosing voice actors and shaping how her characters speak and move.

Meanwhile, WEBTOON’s Korean arm is also expanding into short-form animation. On September 1, 2025, NAVER WEBTOON launched Cuts, a UGC-focused feature where creators and fans can upload their own animated video shorts (under two minutes) based on their favorite webtoons. The first wave of content includes a spin-off from My Daughter Is a Zombie, featuring the popular cat character Aeyong, as well as contributions from local animators and creators.

This move is a clear sign that WEBTOON is leaning into video in a big way, not just by adapting its webcomics but by allowing its own community of creators and fans to animate moments themselves. It may lead to new forms of storytelling and perhaps even open doors for more ambitious adaptations like full animated series or partnerships down the line.

Here are the 14 WEBTOON Original series currently available as Video Episodes:

  • Angel of Death
  • Do You Like Tomboys?
  • Down to Earth
  • Jackson’s Diary
  • Love 4 a Walk
  • Morgana and Oz
  • Osora
  • Red Spine
  • SHIRAI
  • Star Catcher
  • Suitor Armor
  • The D!ckheads
  • The Mafia Nanny
  • Vampire Family

WEBTOON is clearly investing in hybrid formats. By blurring the lines between reading and watching, it’s opening up new ways for fans to discover and engage with its stories on mobile.
